Health Misinformation in Southeast Asia: A Collaborative Network Perspective
Abstract:
The proliferation of misinformation poses a significant challenge, particularly in the realm of health communication. While U.S. National Academies’ guidelines exist to address misinformation, their universal applicability is limited, especially in the culturally diverse and contextually unique landscape of Southeast Asia. This talk introduces the motivation and objectives for the formation of a collaborative network by aiming at combatting health misinformation. The network’s primary objective is to comprehend the prevalent threads of health misinformation within Southeast Asian countries and dissect their cultural underpinnings. By identifying similarities and differences in misleading information, we can tailor interventions accordingly. Building upon the guide, we propose adapting these strategies to address region-specific misinformation, while respecting cultural nuances. Thus, this talk sheds light on the imperative of culturally-adapted strategies in addressing health misinformation. By creating a collaborative network, we endeavor to empower communities, bridge knowledge gaps, and engender a united front against misinformation’s detrimental impact on public health.
