LAST TIME I SAW MACAO: Cinematic representation of Macao

Abstract:

The cinematic representation of Macau has taken on different forms. They are often characterized by the spectacle of casinos, Portuguese-style architecture and mysterious nightlife. However, local filmmakers and artists have different ways of visualizing the city. Through comparing foreign and local perspectives, this talk provides an account of the visual representation of Macau. It considers its implications for students in visual communication and documentary production.

Bio:

Mr. Kin Kuan LAM graduated from Department of Communication, FSS, UM and got his MA degree from Goldsmiths, University of London. He is now an active film and documentary director in Macao. He is also Festival and Programme Director of the Macao International Documentary Festival since 2016. Many of his works were selected for different film events and activities. Based on his rich knowledge and experiences in filmmaking, the department would like to invite him to deliver a speech on the topic of Macao’s documentary films and how Macao has been represented in the films. Students from media studies, visual culture, video production and Macao studies will find this speech useful to their learning.
